They are gentle and affectionate, swim slowly, and pose no harm to anyone. Dugongs are also an important indicator of a healthy and abundant marine ecosystem.
But today, we may be the last generation of Thais to have the opportunity to see dugongs living in the wild. 💔
Fewer than 170 dugongs remain in Thailand, while their mortality rate has risen significantly. Seagrass ecosystems—their primary food source and habitat—are deteriorating. Many stranded dugongs have been found severely emaciated due to a lack of food.
This is a critical moment when we can still help them.
